Are you looking for a stable, in-demand career in the security industry? Becoming a licensed security guard in New York State is your first step! Hereβs everything you need to knowβfrom eligibility requirements to getting hired.
π Step 1: Do You Meet the Requirements?
Before you can start your security guard training, you must:
β Be at least 18 years old
β Be a U.S. citizen or have legal work authorization
β Have no serious criminal convictions (some may disqualify you)
β Have a valid Social Security Number (SSN)
β Be able to speak, read, and write English
π Step 2: Complete the Required Training
To qualify as an unarmed security guard, you must complete:
β 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course β A one-day introductory class covering security basics, legal responsibilities, and professional conduct.
β 16-Hour On-the-Job Training (OJT) Course* β A two-day class with hands-on instruction on emergency procedures, public relations, report writing, and conflict resolution.
If you want to become an armed guard, additional firearm training is required.
*It is highly recommended to take the 16 hour on-the-job training course immediately after taking the 8 hour pre-assignment course, even though it is not technically necessary to get hired. Employers prefer to hire prospective candidates who have both.
π Step 3: Apply for Your Security Guard License
Once you complete your training, you need to:
β Get fingerprinted via IdentoGO for a background check.
β Submit your license application to the NYS Department of State.
β Pay the licensing fee ($36 application fee + fingerprinting fee).
Your license is valid for two years and must be renewed before it expires.
π‘ Step 4: Stay Certified & Maintain Your License
β Take the 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course every year to keep your license active.
β Renew your security license every two years through the NYS Division of Licensing Services.
πΌ Step 5: Get Hired as a Security Guard
Once you’re licensed, itβs time to land a job! Hereβs how:
βΒ Apply to security firms, retail stores, hospitals, event venues, and corporate offices.
βΒ Check with security companiesΒ likeΒ Star Security TrainingΒ for job leads.
βΒ Network with professionalsΒ and attend job fairs
βΒ Get additional certifications
- Fireguard (F-02, F-04, F-80, etc.) β Required for many security jobs in NYC.
